Volunteer

                                 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed for processing operations in preparation for our semi-annual book sales. The following is a summary of some of our ongoing needs.

 Ongoing Needs:

  • Sorting – Individuals to help move and sort donations.  Inspect donations for condition and determine which category books belong to.  Sort books into appropriate category boxes.  Once trained, can work any hours the library is open.  Must be able to carry books in stacks, bags, or boxes from the lobby to the work room.
  • Heavy Lifter: Empty the recycle bin into the recycle dumpster. Move packed boxes of books to our onsite storage.  Usually performed 1–3 times a week.
  • Book Category managers/back-ups.  Working with an experienced volunteer, learn how to screen and price books in a specific category and pack boxes of priced books, understand what sells and what does not.
  • Amazon store assistant.  Process Amazon sales including packaging and mailing of sold books using the Amazon Seller application.  Research new book donations for potential sale on Amazon.  Create new Amazon sale listings via the Amazon Seller application.
  • Publicity/Advertising/Outreach.  Prepare online and print advertising for our semi-annual sales.  Prepare flyers. Maintain the GM Friends Blog. Use social media to expand our digital presence.

POSITIONS

Volunteers typically serve the following roles, with a minimum commitment of a 2-4 hour block:

  • Set-up and tidying: Put up tables, unpack and arrange books. Volunteers also keep tables organized during the sale.
  • Cashiers and assistant cashiers: Cashiers total up customer purchases and handle cash, checks, and credit cards using a Square reader and iPad; assistants read out prices and help customers bag their purchases.
  • Close down: pack up and restore the library to its normal layout after the sale.
  • Hospitality: Help set up, serve and clean up lunches for volunteers during the sale.
BENEFITS

Well, we think the book sales are an awful lot of fun. We're working with a friendly, interesting, and dedicated group of people, and there's always great food in the break room. For middle and high school students, it is a great way to earn some community service hours.

You'll also get pre-sale buying privileges! Volunteers may purchase a few books on the Wednesday before the sale. Restrictions:
  • The quantity of pre-sale purchases are limited (the actual number will be determined closer to the sale).
  • The purchases must be for personal use -- sorry, no book re-sellers.
  • Special items in the display cases can't be purchased before the sale opens.
